Korean artist Lee Jung-Won believes that "true landscape" does not refer to the actual scenery of nature but rather to the inherent principles and meaning within the composition of landscapes—the true essence contained in the scenery. A mountain does not easily reveal its true appearance; only through continuous exploration within the mountain can one gradually gain insight. If the significance of painting lies not in creating a result but in the act of creation itself, then the process of "making" and "exploring" may be the most valuable aspect of all.
The small pieces of paper affixed to the artwork form a sense of flow through their directional placement. By layering paper, the artist simulates the texture and contours of landscapes. Viewed from different angles, the work reveals optical-like visual effects. The preparatory work behind these creations requires an extensive amount of time, including experiences of mountain climbing and sketching. Just as countless elements converge to form a rock, through the repetitive actions of pasting thousands of paper fragments and making tens of thousands of brushstrokes, the artist truly perceives the presence of the mountain. Each work, deeply informed by personal practice and understanding, conveys unique imagery while sharing a common core essence.
